Village View on the Coast
from $19.00
Born on the island of Java, Reijer Stolk migrated to the Netherlands in his early childhood. In 1910 he enrolled at the Applied Arts School in Haarlem, near Amsterdam. Here he learned under teachers Chris Lebeau, Eduard August von Saher, and Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. He was a schoolmate of Maurits Cornelis Escher, although Stolk himself was described by his teachers as the most talented student in the school.
In 1930 his travels to the Gold Coast and Nigeria, where he studied patterns and fabrics, proved to be a monumental influence on his later artistic work. He did not produce many works commercially, however he did often send works to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the RKD in The Hague.
