In 1922, Rebecca Strand, the wife of photographer Paul Strand, visited Georgia O'Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz at their home in upstate New York. The experimental photographs from her visit, especially the nude images of Strand at the lake were described by Stieglitz as “Eye-openers. Am surprised myself for while she was here I imagined I had totally failed.”

The relationship between the four drew complicated due to attractions on all sides, which ultimately lead O’Keeffe to request that three of the more risqué pictures of Strand be sealed for 25 years after their donated to the Art Institute in 1949.
