A la Bastille (Jeanne Wenz)

from $19.00

Born into the aristocracy, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter and illustrator whose participation in the colorful cultural life of Paris allowed him to produce elegant and provocative imagery.

He developed an affinity for brothels, prostitutes and the bohemian lifestyle which directed the subject matter for many of his works. And he was among the painters at the time described as Post-Impressionists, with Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat.

Wenz was the mistress of Frederic Wenz, Toulouse-Lautrec’s fellow student at the painter Fernand Cormon’s studio. She was also the friend of Suzanne Valadon, an artist in her own right and a frequent sitter for Toulouse-Lautrec.
